Billy Joe Thomas, más conocíu como B. J. Thomas, (7 d'agostu de 1942, Hugo (es) – 29 de mayu de 2021, Arlington) ye un cantante popular estauxunidense. Ye conocíu polos sos ésitos de los años sesenta y setenta, qu'apaecieron nes tables de popularidá de la música pop, country y cristiana.
Carrera[editar | editar la fonte]
Thomas creció en Houston (Texas) y la so contorna, onde se graduó de Lamar Consolidated High School, na locadlidad de Rosenberg. Antes de llanzase a la so carrera en solitariu, Thomas cantaba nun coru de la ilesia cuando yera adolescente y depués xunióse al grupu musical The Triumphs.[7][8] Mientres el so últimu añu fíxose amigu de Roy Head, de la banda Roy Head and The Traits. The Traits y The Triumphs participaron en delles batalles de bandes n'eventos de los años sesenta, siendo l'atracción Head y Thomas.
En 1966, B. J. Thomas y The Triumphs llanzaron l'álbum I'm so lonesome I could cry (cola discográfica Pacemaker Records). Nel álbum presentaron el cóver del ésitu de Hank Williams, «I'm so lonesome I could cry» (‘toi tan solo que me pondría a llorar). El single vendió más d'un millón de copies y foi gallardoniáu con un discu d'oru.[9]
El siguiente single, Mama, algamó'l puestu nᵘ 22. Esi mesmu añu, Thomas llanzó un álbum en solitariu del mesmu nome (cola empresa Scepter Records).
En 1968, Thomas volvió consiguir un ésitu, primero con «The eyes of a New York woman», y cinco meses más tarde col muncho más esitosu «Hooked on a feeling», que cuntó col soníu d'un sitar llétricu y foi llanzáu per primer vegada nel álbum On my way (de Scepter Records). «Hooked on a feeling» convertir nel segundu discu de Thomas con ventes millonaries.[9] Un añu más tarde, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid presentaron a Thomas interpretando «Raindrops keep fallin' on my head» (cantar de Burt Bacharach y Hal David) que ganó l'Óscar al meyor cantar orixinal d'esi añu y convirtióse nel cantar númberu unu nel Billboard Hot 100 en xineru de 1970. Les ventes d'esti discu tamién superaron el millón de copies, y Thomas llogró'l so tercer discu d'oru.[9] El cantar tamién foi llanzada nun álbum del mesmu nome. Otros ésitos de los años setenta fueron «Everybody's out of town», «I just can't help believing» (que llegó al nᵘ 9 en Billboard en 1970, con un cóver de Elvis Presley), «Non love at all», «Mighty clouds of joy» y «Rock and roll lullaby».
En 1972, Thomas dexó Scepter Records ―el sellu discográficu pal que trabayó seis años― y pasó un curtiu periodu ―ente 1973 y 1974―, con Paramount Records. Nesi tiempu llanzó dos álbumes, Songs (1973) y Longhorns & London bridges (1974).
En 1975, Thomas llanzó l'álbum Reunion (cola discográfica ABC Records, qu'absorbiera a la discográfica Paramount), que contenía «(Hey won't you play) Another somebody done somebody wrong song» (el cantar col títulu más llargu que ganaría un nᵘ 1 na llista Hot 100). Foi'l primer gran ésitu de Thomas dende 1972 y aseguró-y el so cuartu discu d'oru.[9]
En 1976, Thomas llanzó Home where I belong, producíu por Chris Christian pa Myrrh Records, el primeru de dellos álbumes gospel que Thomas grabaría nesos años. L'álbum aportó a discu de platín, y Thomas convertir nel artista cristianu contemporaneu más importante de la dómina.[10]
En MCA Records, Thomas y Chris Christian grabaron el senciellu que sería'l so últimu ésitu Top 40: Non worry baby, nel so últimu discu de pop, que tamién incluyó l'ésitu d'A/C «Still the lovin’ is fun».
Mientres los años ochenta, el so ésitu nes llistes de pop empezó a menguar, pero munchos de los sos singles llegaron a los puestos cimeros de la llista de singles del país, incluyendo dos primeros de la tabla en 1983: «Whatever happened to old-fashioned love» y «New looks from an old lover», y tamién «Two car garage», que llegó al nᵘ 3 na llista de senciellos d'Estaos Xuníos. En 1981, nel so cumpleaños 39, Thomas convertir nel 60º miembru del Grand Ole Opry.[11]
Thomas anotó otru ésitu, grabando «As long as we got each other», el cantar de la serie Growing Pains con Jennifer Warnes. Una versión posterior, que s'utilizó pa la cuarta temporada de la serie, foi grabada cola cantante británica Dusty Springfield. Thomas llanzó per primer vegada esti cantar nel so álbum de 1985 Throwing rocks at the moon (cola discográfica Columbia Records).
Thomas tamién escribió dos llibros, incluyendo la so autobiografía Home where I belong, y protagonizó les películes Jory y Jake's Corner. La so voz apaeció en dellos jingles comerciales, como'l de Coca-Cola, de Pepsi, y de la compañía de teléfonos Bell. El 31 d'avientu de 2011, Thomas foi'l presentador ya intérprete del Hyundai Sun Bowl 2011, en El Paso (Texas).
El 2 d'abril de 2013, Thomas llanzó The living room sessions, un álbum con arreglos acústicos d'ésitos bien conocíos. Cuntó coles collaboraciones de cantantes establecíos y emerxentes, qu'acompañaron a Thomas en siete de los dolce cantares.[12]
El 3 d'avientu de 2013, l'Academia Nacional de les Artes y les Ciencies anunció que'l senciellu Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head (1969) de B. J. Thomas incluyóse nel Grammy Hall of Fame 2014.[13]
