James Gordon MacArthur (8 d'avientu de 1937, Los Angeles – 28 d'ochobre de 2010, Jacksonville) foi un actor d'Estaos Xuníos, conocíu sobremanera pol so papel de Danny "Danno" Williams na serie televisiva Hawaii Five-O.
Primeros años[editar | editar la fonte]
Nacíu en Los Angeles, California, foi fíu adoptivu del dramaturgu Charles MacArthur y de l'actriz Helen Hayes. Crióse en Nyack, Nueva York, xunto a la so hermana biolóxica, Mary. Estudió na Allen-Stevenson School de la ciudá de Nueva York, y darréu na Solebury School de New Hope (Pennsylvania), onde destacó en baloncestu, fútbol americanu y béisbol. Nel so últimu añu en Solebury, ente otres actividaes, editó'l periódicu de la escuela, The Scribe, ya interpretó a Scrooge nuna representación de A Christmas Carol. Amás empecipió una rellación sentimental con una compañera d'estudios, Joyce Bulifant, cola que se casó en payares de 1958, divorciándose dambos a los nueve años.

El so debú como actor teatral asocedió en Olney (Maryland), en 1949, actuando mientres dos selmanes en The Corn is Green. Al branu siguiente repitió'l papel en Dennis, Massachusetts, poniéndose en marcha la so carrera teatral. En 1954 foi John Day en Life With Father, con Howard Lindsay y Dorothy Stickney.
Amás, de como intérprete, Mac Arthur trabayó como pintor de decoraos, direutor de llume y xefe d'aparcamientu. Les circunstancies lleváronlu a dar llume al show de Barbara Bel Geddes The Little Hut y al de Gloria Vanderbilt The Swan. A los 18 años encarnó a Hal Ditmar nel telefilme Deal a Blow, dirixíu por John Frankenheimer y protagonizáu por Macdonald Carey, Phyllis Thaxter y Edward Arnold. En 1956 Frankenheimer dirixó una versión cinematográfica, titulada nesa ocasión The Young Stranger, y na cual MacArthur volvía ser el protagonista. La so actuación ganar a la crítica, siendo nomáu al Premiu BAFTA de 1958 al meyor actor promesa.[4] Al empar qu'estudiaba historia na Universidá de Harvard, rodó The Light in the Forest y Third Man on the Mountain para Walt Disney. Decidíu a dedicase totalmente a l'actuación, dexó Harvard pa rodar otros dos títulos de Disney, Kidnapped y Swiss Family Robinson, consideraos anguaño como clásicos, ya inda populares.
Mac Arthur debutó en Broadway en 1960, actuando xunto a Jane Fonda en Invitation to a March, trabayu pol cual recibió un Theater World Award. Anque nunca volvió a Broadway, siguió activu nel teatru actuando en producciones como Under the Yum Yum Tree, The Moon Is Blue, John Loves Mary (cola so esposa, Joyce Bulifant), Barefoot in the Park y Murder at the Howard Johnson's.
Más palantre trabayó nel cine en filmes como The Interns, Fiebre nel sangre, The Truth About Spring y Cry of Battle, al igual que nos menos esitosos The Love-Ins y The Angry Breed. Nel plató de The Angry Breed, en 1968, MacArthur conoció a Melody Patterson, que sería la so segunda esposa. Casar na islla de Kauai en xunetu de 1970, y divorciáronse dellos años más tarde. En 1966 encarnó al Tte. Harley Wilson en "The Outsider", episodiu númberu 20 de la segunda temporada de Twelve O'Clock High. Cola so madre, Helen Hayes, trabayu en 1968 nel capítulu "The Pride of the Lioness" de la serie televisiva Tarzan. MacArthur tamién fixo una destacada actuación na entrega de Los Intocables titulada Death For Sale.

En 1967, Leonard Freeman, productor y coguionista de Hang 'Em High, fixo'l pilotu pa una nueva serie policiaca televisiva, Hawaii Five-O. Antes d'emitise, el programa foi bien recibíu pol públicu de prueba, quitando dalguna antipatía col actor qu'interpretaba a Dan Williams. Freeman recordó l'actuación de MacArthur en Hang 'Em High y dio-y el papel. Hawaii Five-O emitir mientres doce años, once con MacArthur. En dexando Hawaii Five-O a la fin de la oncena temporada, MacArthur volvió al teatru, actuando en The Lunch Hour xunto a Cybill Shepherd.

En 1984 MacArthur actuó na farsa A Bedfull of Foreigners, representada en Chicago esi añu y en Michigan en 1985. Tres ello actuó en The Hasty Heart enantes de pasar dos años alloñáu del mundu del espectáculu. En 1987 volvió al teatru con The Foreigner, y dempués foi Mortimer nuna xira nacional con Arsenic and Old Lace, obra na qu'actuaben Jean Stapleton, Marion Ross y Larry Storch. Asina, en 1959–60, xunto al actor James Franciscus y a Alan Ladd, Jr., foi propietariu d'una empresa de servicios telefónicos en Beverly Hills. Nel branu de 2010 axustóse que MacArthur fixera un cameo na nueva versión que CBS producía de Hawaii Five-0, un papel que, por causa del so fallecimientu, foi finalmente dau a Al Harrington.
Fallecimiento[editar | editar la fonte]
James MacArthur finó por causes naturales el 28 d'ochobre de 2010 na Clínica Mayo de Jacksonville (Florida). Sobrevivió-y el so tercer esposa, H. B. Duntz, los sos cuatro fíos y seis nietos.[6] L'episodiu Ho'apono de la versión de Hawaii Five-0 de 2010 foi dedicada a MacArthur.[7] Foi soterráu nel Campusantu Oak Hill de Nyack.
