Les turniacees (nome científicu Thurniaceae) formen una pequeña familia de plantes monocotiledónees natives de les rexones tropicales del nordeste de Brasil y Guyana, y tamién de Sudáfrica. Pueden ser reconocíes polos sos tarmu erectos, les sos fueyes serraes, y les sos flores pentacícliques con periantu escarioso. La familia foi reconocida por sistemes de clasificación modernos como'l sistema de clasificación APG III (2009[3]) y el APWeb (2001 d'equí p'arriba[2]), nos que consta de dos xéneros, Thurnia y tamién Prionium, esti postreru fuera de posición incierta hasta la década del 2000.

Thurniaceae pertenez al clado ciperacees-xuncos (xunto con Cyperaceae y Juncaceae), y puede ser hermanu del restu del cláu (Plunkett et al. 1995,[4] Munro y Linder 1997[5]). Ver Poales pa un discutiniu sobre'l cláu ciperacees-xuncos.

El xéneru Prionium foi dacuando allugáu en Juncaceae, pero allugáu en Thurniaceae según los últimos datos moleculares (Munro y Linder 1998).[6]

La familia foi reconocida pol APG III (2009[3]), el Linear APG III (2009[1]) asignó-y el númberu de familia 97. La familia yá fuera reconocida pol APG II (2003[7]).

Los xéneros, según el APG III (2009[3]), y tamién el APWeb[2] (visitáu en xineru del 2009), cola publicación válida y distribución según Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew[8] (visitáu en xineru del 2009):

  • Prionium E.Mey., Linnaea 7: 130 (1832). 1 especie, Prionium serratum.
  • Thurnia Hook.f., Hooker's Icon. Pl. 15: t. 1407 (1883). Colombia a N. de Suramérica. 3 especies.

Sinónimu, según APG II (2003[7]): Prioniaceae S.L.Munro & H.P.Linder (1998)
