Estensión del wappo

El wappo ye una llingua indíxena estinguida que se faló nel Valle Alexander al norte de San Francisco por miembros de la etnia wappo. La postrera falante fluente de la llingua, Laura Fish Somersal, morrió en 1990. La desapaición del wappo atribuyir al usu del inglés na escuela y a factores socioeconómicos acomuñaes a les condiciones de trabayu.[1]

Acordies con Somersal, el nome de la etnia y el nome de la llingua deriva de la pallabra española 'guapu'.[2] Anque'l nome qu'usaben orixinalmente paez ser Ashochimi.[3]

Los intentos de clasificar el wappo nun concluyeron con un parentescu claru. Propúnxose un parentescu alloñáu col idioma yuki, pero la validez de felicidá propuesta sigui siendo aldericada. Paul Radin publicó los primeros testos sobre gramática del wappo en 1920. Jesse O. Sawyer publicó un diccionariu (English-Wappo Vocabulary, 1965) y siguió l'estudiu de la llingua mientres tola so vida. Otros llingüistes que contribuyeron al estudiu del wappo son William Y. Elmendorf, Alice Shepherd, Sandra Thompson, Joseph Sung-Yul Park and Charles N. Li.[1]
