El atákapa ye una llingua escastada y aisllada, nativa del suroeste de Louisiana y del este de Texas, Estaos Xuníos.

Variación xeográfica[editar | editar la fonte]

Había dos variedaes o dialeutos del atákapa:

  1. Esti
  2. Oeste

El dialeutu atákapa Esti conocer por una llista de 287 pallabres recoyíes en 1802 por Martín Duralde. Los postreros falantes vivíen na zona de Poste des Attackapas (Saint Martinville), anguaño Franklin, Louisiana.

El atákapa Oeste ye'l meyor conocíu, con pallabres, frases y testos recoyíos en 1885, 1907 y 1908 por Albert Gatschet. La mayor parte foi recoyida en Lake Charles, Luisiana. Los postreros parlantes fueron Louison Huntington, Delilah Moss, Teet Verdine, y Armojean Reon. Esiste una vocabulariu más antiguu, con una llista de 45 pallabres recoyíes en 1721 por Jean Béranger. Estos falantes fueron prindaos na zona de Galveston Bay.

Anque John Swanton aducía que'l vocabulariu de Béranger yera un dialeutu akokisa faláu pola etnia akokisa, nun hai evidencia real que sofite esta conexón.
